in order to survive the bitter cold of a viennese winter spent on study exchange, i designed and made a leather jacket.  inspired in part by the lines of expensive rick owens’ pieces, and classic old bike jackets, i started from scratch making calico patterns, and then stitched half a cow together on my old treadle sewing machine….

i got pretty silly when taking photos, but that happens….

i didn’t get to the lining at home and had to buy an old sewing machine from a grumpy old hairy man on austrian ebay who greeted me at his apartment door in very skanky underpants when i went to pick it up.
: )
i wanted to line the jacket in an amazing bolt of colourful japanese fabric, but sadly it turned out to be polyester, and knowing my natural stinkiness, i opted for a lining of thick cotton with a big orange dot inside.

it is wonderful – the fit is perfect.  like a second home.  it makes me feel comfortable on the snowy streets of vienna, and i totally blend in with the 80’s vibe of prague when i go there.  and i made it myself!  there is something to be said for making your own everything!!!

and yes – it is totally un-vegetarian, and the only way i can think of making sense of that is to wear it well, keep it forever, love it, repair it, and make sure it gets lots of use.
