after years of making these dense fluid snake chains out of laboriously hand-cut stainless steel and titanium, with an occasional plastic version, i recently made an entirely wood version for a small body of work that sits alongside shaun gladwell’s show at sherman contemporary art foundation….

so much softer than steel, but surprisingly durable. it is amazingly light, and makes a beautiful clacky sound. i do want to give it a thorough trial run myself and see how durable it really is under duress – maybe i will make a bracelet version soon….
this one was made out of canadian rock maple blackened with charcoal ink. the wood was rough cut, lathed into a rod, drilled, and hand-cut with a jewellers blade into links. middle pivot discs were also turned and drilled, and dowel pulled to size for pivot pins. fun!!!

if you do go to sherman foundation in paddington, make sure to check out the shaun gladwell as well when you go to see my jewellery.
